Domestic Abuse: Support and Protection

Support and protection for domestic abuse guidance

Getting support quickly

If you or your children are in immediate danger, call 999. For non-emergency support in England, you can contact the police on 101, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247, or specialist local services.

Domestic abuse includes physical violence, threats, coercive control, financial abuse, and psychological harm. You do not have to wait for a physical injury to seek protection.

Civil protection orders

  • Non-Molestation Order — can prohibit harassment, threats, or contact
  • Occupation Order — can regulate who lives in the family home

These are family-court orders. In urgent cases, applications can sometimes be made without notice. A solicitor or specialist adviser can explain the evidence the court will need.

Practical safety steps

  • Keep copies of important documents somewhere safe
  • Save emergency numbers under discreet names if needed
  • Tell a trusted person your plan
  • Document incidents with dates where it is safe to do so

Children and abuse

Children’s welfare is central. Abuse directed at a parent can still harm a child. Courts and professionals take allegations seriously; raise concerns with your solicitor, CAFCASS, or children’s services as appropriate.

Where Legally Blessing fits

We publish plain-English guides so you understand options and language you may hear from professionals. We are not an emergency service and do not replace solicitors, police, or specialist domestic-abuse organisations.

If you need urgent help, contact emergency services or a specialist helpline first.
